During the pursuit, Supreme Leader Snoke, the leader of the First Order, was killed by his apprentice, Kylo Ren, who appointed himself the new Supreme Leader. Forced to depart from D'Qar, the Resistance fled across space from the First Order, though both factions suffered from losses. With the New Republic destroyed, the Resistance had to survive on its own. Nonetheless, the New Republic collapsed, and the First Order moved in to seize military control over the galaxy, escalating a Cold War into full scale open warfare. Shortly afterwards, the Resistance launched an assault on the First Order stronghold, ending the Starkiller crisis with the destruction of the superweapon. The war officially began in the year 34 ABY, three decades after the Battle of Endor, when the First Order fired its planet-sized superweapon on Starkiller Base on the Republic capital of Hosnian Prime, destroying the Hosnian system, and with it the New Republic Senate and Defense Fleet. While the First Order sought to conquer the entirety of the galaxy and restore the fallen Galactic Empire, the Resistance fought to restore the democracy brought about by the New Republic after their previous struggle against the Empire. The First Order-Resistance War, also known as the First Order/Resistance War was a pan- galactic war between the First Order and the Resistance that erupted following the First Order's destruction of the New Republic.
